one of detroit’s best kept secrets, rick wade has been producing late night tracks and tapping into the essence of deepness since the 90’s. known for their universal appeal and appearing on over 20 different labels worldwide, soulful, timeless grooves are his signature. growing up in buchanan mi, 1 hour outside of chicago he was influenced by chicago radio station wbmx and the salsoul material and local stations that played the likes of al green and isaac hayes. in 1993 rick and dan bell started harmonie park to release house material and in 1995 rick started another label bass force primarily as an outlet for the booty / bass material that he records under the big daddy rick moniker. this time rick brings us “the depth charge ep”, three tracks of lavish organic deepness, with jazzy rhodes-chords, strings, trumpets, warm lush big sounding pads, combined with soulful vocal samples and crisp beats. london’s westlake72 contributes with a stunning remix of “be there”, injecting a fierce disco groove and vibe.

london based disco outfit faze action team up with celebrated anglo/brazilian artist, nina miranda for proto house crossover. faze action have always managed to take different musical traditions and blend them to create sounds that are somehow familiar whilst simultaneously containing the unexpected. last year s mangwana, featured long time faze action collaborator, zeke manyika, singing in his native zimbabwean shona over faze action s infectious disco production. this time, british/brazilian singer, artist and all round creative force de majeur, nina miranda, takes things further with her invitation to vamos pintar or let s paint, in portuguese. on the surface there is the familiar faze action restyled proto house but it soon becomes apparent that the brothers have appropriated more than just a brazilian vocal. punchy 808 drums and fizzy synths are infused with brazilian caixa and pandaro as if they had always been designed to co-exist. the remixes come from the illustrious max essa, whose british born/tokyo resident background chimes well with the international nature of this latest offering. his slo-mo bubble dub simmers with mediterranean sun that reclines into romantic piano flourishes and dubbed out vocals, whilst the extended dub manages to draw out the original elements at their original tempo. faze action s own paradise 90 dub closes the package by keeping close to the original arrangement with added economy and plenty of dub delay of course.

circus company and the mole have long been making eyes at each other across the same crowded dancefloor. colin de la plante?s primary project is synonymous with the off-kilter corner of house music we like to spend our time dancing in, and the labels he releases on are close cousins of the circus troupe. from wagon repair to philpot, musique risquee to perlon, it?s a wonder that we haven?t worked together previously, but finally that?s been put right with little sunshine. stripped back, understated disco grooves have always been the bread and butter of the mole?s sound, while infectious, cyclical melodic patterns are equally important in making his unique version of house music. on the title track, those elements are presented with full force, but in between the driving rhythms linger the most gorgeous keys, bringing a mellow introspection to the track as a neat counterpoint to the energy of the drums and arpeggios

black ivory was the pride of harlem and new yorks answer to the philly-fine delfonics but with infinitely more teen sex appeal. this silky-smooth 70s harmony trio featured the fabulous falsetto lead of leroy burgess (nephew of philly soul legend, thom bell) and charted four top-40 r&b singles and two top-30 lps under the guiding hand of their manager and today records driving force, patrick adams. songs like, you and i, time is love and dont turn around (which they performed live on soul train) are acknowledged sweet soul classics. and as the decade progressed and tastes changed, they successfully conquered the disco dancefloors with fave-raves like, mainline and walking downtown (saturday night) for buddah records which were liberally sampled by the hip-hop generation a true testament to the staying power of their incessantly soulful sound.

three years in, blackhall & bookless jaunt label is becoming a serious force for forward thinking, fractured techno exploration. on this split ep with chad, the duo take the a-side and present two different versions of links. the battle rework is a tense and dramatic tumble through dub techno soundscapes, while the bleak remix pares the elements down to a more focused, minimalist thrum. chad presents a wholly different vibe on the flip, using rich, warm synthesiser tones to draw you in to afters, and then scenery regular asok takes up remix duties on the track with an immersive version that borders on breakbeat.

the content label presents a dynamic new split ep from lex (de kalhex) and dday one, titled parallel presence. the eps title reveals some clues: parallel refers to something similar to another, while presence imagines a thing that exists but is not seen. these two producers, as kindred spirits, strive to work on this deeper level. parallel presence is an expressive step forward, presenting intricate beats, thoughtful samples, and otherworldly vibes colluding towards a mesmerizing whole.

roman producer (and a force behind minimalrome label) valerio lombardozzi known as heinrich dressel returns to barba with a second release for our label, titled -the styx swamp-. heinrich has a unique way of combining classic techno and electro sounds with elements from the beloved drexcyan universe and john carpenter leitmotifs, and making them come together in a manner that both moves your body and pushes your mind beyond the point of awareness. as with the previous record, -lurking underwater-, here he pulls off the move with the same efficiency and without sounding like he s repeating himself. -gray slope-, -sailing the nether waterways- and -the styx swamp- are all quite moody and deep, rich with sound and thick with vibe. however, the tracks feel equally at home in 4 am techno situation and a heady afterhours affair. he truly is a master of crafting hybrids whose influences get so flawlessly embedded that it s hard to point them out. if that s not enough, -the styx swamp- got a treatment by nigel rogers aka perseus traxx, a multi-faceted producer and a mighty live act performer. nigel stayed respectful to the original but made the original s bouncy groove into something more direct and reduced, while retaining the same feel conditioned by lead synth s hypnotic quality. we re known to give a little bit of extra love to our releases so (as all before) this one s pressed onto a heavy duty 180 gram vinyl and beautifully packaged in an original artwork by emaemaema.
